How mindfulness affects mind and body

Regular meditation increases activity in a number of brain regions, including those parts involved in learning and memory processes, emotion regulation and perspective taking. It improves psychological functions of attention, compassion and empathy.
Plus it has a calming affect on the autonomic nervous system and in decreasing cortisol. It boosts the immune system and improves medical conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, menstrual syndrome and chronic pain; and improves psychological conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, phobias and eating disorders.
Mindfulness has roots in the Buddhist belief system, although there is
a tradition of contemplation within most religions and belief systems, including
Christianity and there is plenty of evidence, including from the mental health
arena, showing how mindfulness can help reduce stress.
So what are you waiting for? Enrol in a class today, or start doing a simple five minute meditation at home/work. It really does work!

Healing frequencies

No matter how many high-tech cures modern medicine brings us, alternative evangelists will always argue loudly that the true secrets of well-being lie in esoteric notions such as ‘healing frequencies’, magnets and astrological alignments.

The latest example of this is a book by Matthew Silverstone, a successful London businessman. He became fascinated by alternative medicine after seeing his 19-year-old son recover from a bout of chronic fatigue syndrome so severe that he did not even have the energy to talk to people.

Despite being a tough-minded businessman, Silverstone believes the cure was brought about by an alternative healer who recommended therapies such as feeling the energy given off by trees.

In the book, Blinded By Science, Silverstone claims to have discovered that the key to all health problems lies in the fact that ‘everything vibrates — absolutely everything, from the nucleus of an atom to the molecules of our blood, our organs, our brain, light, sound, plants, animals, Earth, space, the universe’. Silverstone claims that if we were to embrace ‘vibrational medicine’ by developing therapies based on sound waves, magnets, and the Moon’s  electromagnetic pull, we could cure all the world’s ills.
Such ideas have long been dismissed as deluded mumbo-jumbo by mainstream science. But the fascinating fact is that science is now discovering that we really can cure an amazing array of illnesses — from erectile dysfunction to tumours — using precisely those ‘mumbo-jumbo’ vibrations and magnets.

Alternative-cure evangelists such as Silverstone are hardly vindicated, though. The fact is that today’s scientists are using these forces in ways that the esoteric healers never imagined.
These new, high-tech therapies are a world apart from the unproven, ineffective and often dangerous ways in which they can be offered by (often rogue) practitioners.

So while the claims Silverstone makes for various therapies would be dismissed by most medics, for people interested in healing that uses vibrations or energy fields, we identify some of the more far-out health links that may not
be entirely hocus-pocus.

The magic of Tee Tree Oil

20/10/2013

Millions of pounds are spent on different types of cleaning materials for our hospitals and yet nothing seems to be working. They have cleaning fluids for our hands, for the ward equipment and others for linen etc. The staff must think they’re in a nightmare.
Are these expensive measures to keep bugs at bay, or to put the publics
mind at rest? I can’t understand why they won’t try something as simple and cost
effective as the great Tee Tree oil.
I love T Tree and I can’t understand why it isn’t used more in today’s world. I use it for cleaning, instead of bleach. It’s so much better for the environment and safe if my grandchildren if they go into the kitchen cupboards.

I put a drop in my kettle to de-scale it and I use it in a spray bottle, to clear germs from the air and I also put it in oil burners for the same use.

The little beauty can also help heal stomach problems, in the form of Manuka Honey, which is taken from bees that have been on the Tee Tree bush, making its honey anti-bacterial, and a far better option than the dreaded intake of a triple
antibiotics that is given from the doctor, for which there is a lesser chance of
it being successful.
Surely those in charge of the hospitals must know how fantastic the oil
is?
I keep wondering if I write to the powers that be, they may change their methods and help them clean up our hospitals……but would they? Could it be down to something more sinister….such as links to profits from the cleaning companies?
